POCATELLO, Idaho – The Western Oregon women's basketball team battled back from an early deficit on Saturday night before dropping its exhibition finale at Idaho State, 73-56, on Saturday night at Reed Gym.
Â
Jasmine Miller led the Wolves with 16 points and eight rebounds on 6-of-9 shooting, while
Emily Howey added 10 points and five rebounds.
Â
"Jasmine stepped up in a big way tonight," WOU head coach
Holli Howard-Carpenter said. "She did it on the glass and gave us a big boost in the second half."
Â
After trailing 22-9 at the end of the first quarter, WOU outscored the Bengals by 10 points in the next 10 minutes to trail 30-27 at halftime. The deficit was six points after three periods, but the Bengals separated from the Wolves in the final quarter.
Â
"I'm really proud of how we fought, we closed out the first half really well," Howard-Carpenter said. "Our number one goal was to get better and I think we did that."
Â
The Wolves shot 21-of-52 from the floor on the night (40 percent), but missed out on chances from the stripe (12-27).
Â
"Had we stepped up to the free –throw line and knocked them down, we would have given ourselves a better shot at the end," Howard-Carpenter added.
Â
Idaho State held a 45-38 edge in rebounding and outscored the Wolves in the paint, 40-24.
Â
Western Oregon opens up its regular season next week in a tournament hosted by Cal State East Bay. The Wolves face the host school on Friday, Nov. 13 at 4 p.m.
