Written by Matt Rawlings, Sports Information InternSEASIDE, Calif. – In the final game of a four-game series between the Western Oregon baseball team and Cal State Monterey Bay, the Wolves lose another close game by a score of 2-1 at the Otter Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Western Oregon (2-10) was led by
Tim Rausch, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a walk and he recorded the only extra-base hit for the Wolves on Sunday. Junior
Brenden Shaffer, senior
Michael Sherwin, and junior
Cody Sullivan were the only other players to record hits on Sunday. Junior
Brandon Oliver recorded the only RBI for the Wolves in the loss. Junior
Garrett Alvarez got the start on the mound for the Wolves, going 6.0 innings and giving up six hits and one earned run while striking out five.
Cal State Monterey Bay (4-4) was led by Will Rosado, who went 3-for-5 on the day. Kevin Davidson and A.C. Nunez each had a pair of hits for UCSMB. Cody Gappa got the start on the mound and he went 5.0 innings and gave up only one hit and one earned run while striking out three. Jacob Cox earned his first victory in relief for UCSMB by recording the final two outs in the top of the 9
th.
UCSMB got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the 3
rd. After being no-hit for the first four innings, Rausch was able to break it up in the top of the 5
th when he roped a double down the left field line. Oliver was able to bring in senior
Garret Harpole on a groundout to first base, which tied the score at one.
Both teams were unable to threaten to score through the 8
th inning. The Wolves posed a threat in the top of the 9
th with runners on first and second with one out, but Rausch hit into a double play to end the inning. With two outs in the bottom of the 9
th, UCSMB 3
rd baseman Matt Urakami, who reached earlier in the inning on a single, scored on a passed ball to end the game.
The Wolves return to action on Friday, February 20, when travel to Lewiston Idaho for a three-game series against Lewis & Clark State College.
