TURLOCK, Calif. – Sophomore
Ku'ulei Siolo and freshman
Zoe Clark each registered two hits, as Western Oregon University's softball team closed out pool play at the 14th Annual Tournament of Champions presented by Turlock Convention & Visitors Bureau with a 6-0 loss against No. 4-ranked California State University Monterey Bay Saturday at the Pedretti Sports Complex Fields.
Siolo and Clark combined for four of the six hits by Western Oregon (11-20), as the senior duo of
Amanda Evola and
Jourdan Williams tallied the other two hits for the Wolves. Junior
Stephanie Morgan and sophomore
Sammi Cadwallader combined to pitch the complete 6.0 innings, as Morgan allowed five earned runs on six hits in 2.1 innings of work before turning the ball over to Cadwallader for the final 3.2 innings as she allowed one earned run on two hits.
Cal State Monterey Bay (29-7) was led offensively by Bianca Noriega with a perfect 3-for-3 effort at the plate, while Madison Casto drove in five of the Otters' six runs that included her sixth home run of the season. In the circle, Cori Reinhardt picked up her 17th win of the season allowing six hits to go along with a game-high nine strikeouts.
In the bottom of the first inning, Cal State Monterey Bay put two runs on the board via RBI singles by Noriega and Casto that allowed Jayme Stark and Reinhardt to score as the Otters took an early 2-0 lead.
Two innings later, CSUMB added three more runs to the scoreboard on Casto's three-run home run over the right field fence that extended the Otters' lead to 5-0 after three innings of play.
The game's final run would be scored in the bottom of the fifth inning when Casto lifted a sacrifice fly to left field that brought home Reinhardt after she led off the at-bat with a walk, as Cal State Monterey Bay took a 6-0 lead.
Western Oregon would threaten to break up Reinhardt's fifth shut out of the season, as the Wolves got a lead off single from Siolo before she was lifted for freshman pinch runner Amy Frazier. Two batters later, Frazier would advance to third on a double by Clark. Unfortunately that would be as close as WOU would get to scoring, as CSUMB would get a game-ending groundout back to Reinhardt that helped the Otters secure their fourth win in five games at this weekend's Tournament of Champions.
Next up for the Wolves will be the Tritons of the University of California, San Diego, as Western Oregon and UCSD will compete in bracket play as part of Consolation #1 beginning at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 29, at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex Fields in Turlock, California.
