TURLOCK, Calif. – Five different Wolves registered a hit, as Western Oregon University's softball team dropped its opening game of Day #2 at the 14th Annual Tournament of Champions presented by Turlock Convention & Visitors Bureau against Hawaii Hilo, 11-0 in five innings, Saturday at the Pedretti Sports Complex Fields.
Western Oregon (11-19) would get hits from senior
Amanda Evola, junior
Elaine Sperry, sophomore
Lexi Jennings, sophomore
Destiny Kuehl, and freshman
Amy Anderson, while the Wolves used three pitchers – junior
Alyson Boytz, freshman
Lizzet Dominguez, and junior
Stephanie Morgan – that allowed a combined 11 runs (10 earned) on 11 hits with a combined two strikeouts.
Hawaii Hilo (19-13) would get two hits each from Colleen Aubrey, Melanie Morelos, Vanessa Salinas, and Danielle Pulino, while Amanda Lara registered a game-high four RBI to go along with three runs batted in by Salinas on a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate en route to helping her perfomance in the circle. Salinas would go the distance allowing five hits with four K's in 5.0 innings of work.
The Vulcans would begin the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, as Hawaii Hilo scored seven runs on six hits with the highlight coming off the bat of Lara via a grand slam over the right field fence that handed UHH a 7-0 lead.
Hawaii Hilo would add three more runs in the bottom of the second inning on a three-run home run by Salinas that cleared the center field fence increasing the Vulcans' lead to 10-0.
The game's final run would be scored in the bottom of the third inning when Hawaii Hilo took advantage of a Western Oregon fielding error that allowed Emily Greene to score UHH's 11th and final run.
Western Oregon's best scoring chance came in the top of the fourth inning when the Wolves loaded the bases on three infield singles by Evola, Jennings, and Anderson only to watch UHH's Salinas get out of the jam with a inning-ending foul out.
Neither team would threaten again, as Hawaii Hilo took advantage of the fifth-inning mercy-rule ending the game after the top of the fifth with the Vulcans ahead by eight-or-more runs.
Western Oregon will close out pool play at the Tournament of Champions later today – Saturday, March 28 – against No. 4-ranked California State University Monterey Bay beginning at approximately 1:45 p.m. at the Pedretti Sports Complex Fields in Turlock, California.
