@WOUSoftball Moves to Consolation #1 Bracket Finals With Win Over UC San Diego

TURLOCK, Calif. – Western Oregon University's softball team moved to the finals of Consolation #1 at the 14th annual Tournament of Champions presented by Turlock Convention & Visitors Bureau with a 4-3 victory over the University of California, San Diego Sunday at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex.

Western Oregon (12-20) would get three hits from sophomore Kelsie Gardner, while four other Wolves – senior Amanda Evola, sophomore Emma Alfonso, sophomore Destiny Kuehl, and sophomore Ku'ulei Siolo – tallied hits en route to accounting for WOU's seven hits in the game. In the circle, junior Alyson Boytz went the distance allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits in 7.0 innings of work to go along with one strikeout en route to picking up her fifth victory of the season.

UC San Diego (19-15) ended play at the Tournament of Champions being led by Rachel Phillips and Taylor Abeyta with two hits each, while three other Tritons registered a hit each to go along with UCSD's lone RBI off the bat of Lauren Sanders. Alexis Edwards would go the distance for UC San Diego, as she allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits in 6.0 innings of work as she also registered a game-high two K's for the Tritons.

Neither team would score until the top of the third inning when UC San Diego put a single run on the board on three hits with Sanders driving home the Tritons' lone run of the game on a RBI single through the left side that scored Abeyta after she registered an infield single four batters earlier.

Western Oregon would waste little time in grabbing the lead, as the Wolves scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning on RBI by Evola and Siolo. Evola would bring home Kuehl on a UCSD error before Siolo plated Gardner on a single through the right side that handed Western Oregon a 2-1 lead.

In a back-and-forth contest, UC San Diego would jump back in front in the top of the fourth inning when the Tritons took advantage of four Western Oregon errors to score two runs and grabbed a 3-2 lead.

Western Oregon would jump back into the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when the Wolves capitalized on a pair of UCSD errors that allowed Kuehl and sophomore Lexi Jennings to score on a muffed throw by the Tritons, as WOU secured a 4-3 lead that they would never relinquish.

In the top of the sixth inning, UC San Diego had a chance to tie the game when Kendall Baker attempted to lay down a bunt with runners on second and third only to have Western Oregon's defense jump on the ball and throw out the potential game-tying run at home to keep the Wolves' one-run lead.

Neither team would threaten to score again, as the Wolves picked up their first win of the weekend at the Tournament of Champions en route to moving onto the Consolation #1 Bracket finals later today – Sunday, March 29 – against Academy of Art University beginning at 1:30 PM at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex in Turlock, California.
