MONMOUTH, Ore. – Junior
Darrien Moran pitched a complete game in the opener and freshman
Brady Miller picked up his second win of the season, as Western Oregon University's baseball team swept a Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) double header against Saint Martin's University, 7-1 & 3-2, Saturday at the WOU Baseball Field.
Western Oregon (19-19, 14-7 GNAC) would get a combined three hits each from senior
Matt Taylor and junior
Cody Sullivan, while seniors
Jacob Whisler and
Marcus Hinkle each tallied a pair of hits on the afternoon for the Wolves. Sullivan also had a big day driving in five runs, while Taylor and Hinkle each scored a pair of runs for WOU.
Moran went the distance in Game #1, as he allowed one earned run on six hits to go along with a game-high tying six strikeouts en route to picking up his fourth win of the season. In the nightcap, Miller went the opening 4.0 innings allowing two earned runs on four hits with a game-high six K's before junior
Shawn Domke allowed just one hit in relief over the final 3.0 innings en route to collecting his fourth save of the year.
Saint Martin's (13-23, 7-15 GNAC) were led offensively by Adam Eskil, David Bellamy, and Blake Lord with two hits each, while Shayne Kurihara, Travis Shaw, and Chandler Tracy each collected a RBI for the Saints.
Josh Moss got the start for SMU in the opener, as he allowed six earned runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings of work to go along with a game-high tying six strikeouts before turning the ball over to the bullpen that consisted of Chase DeCoito and Trevor Young for the final 2.1 innings. In Game #2, Riley Moore went the opening 4.0 innings for Saint Martin's allowing three earned runs on three hits before SMU's bullpen held Western Oregon without a hit over the final 2.0 innings as Ben Shuey, Ryan Dorney, and Brad Banker combined to strike out three WOU hitters.
GAME #1 — WESTERN OREGON 7, SAINT MARTIN'S 1Saturday's opener started out a pitcher's dual between Moran and Moss before Western Oregon broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning when senior
Austin Hamilton drive in Whisler on a RBI groundout with runners on second and third to put the Wolves ahead 1-0.
Two innings later, Western Oregon added three more runs when Taylor scored on a wild pitch before Sullivan ripped a two-run triple into the right field gap that scored junior
Nathan Etheridge and senior
Garret Harpole to extend WOU's lead to 4-0 after five innings of play.
Western Oregon would add a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a RBI single by Taylor before capitalizing on a failed pickoff by SMU, as the Wolves capped its scoring with a single run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a solo home run over the left center field fence by Sullivan that put WOU in front 7-0.
Saint Martin's would snap Moran's bid for a shutout in the top of the ninth inning when Eskil tripled to left field before coming home on a groundout by Kurihara for the final score of 7-1.
Hinkle, Taylor, and Sullivan each collected two hits for Western Oregon, while Sullivan drove in a game-high three RBI that included his second home run of the season.
Saint Martin's would get a pair of hits from Eskil, while four other Saints also tallied hits in the opener.
GAME #2 — WESTERN OREGON 3, SAINT MARTIN'S 2In Saturday's finale, Western Oregon took advantage of three runs in the bottom of the first inning as Harpole drove in Hinkle with a sacrifice fly to center field before Sullivan recorded his second triple of the afternoon that scored junior
Cody Poznanski and Taylor to give the Wolves an early 3-0 lead.
Saint Martin's would answer back with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning when Shaw brought home Jake Huskey with a sacrifice fly to left field before Tracy ripped a RBI single up the middle that scored Lord and pulled the Saints with a single run (3-2).
Neither team would score again, as the game turned into a pitcher's dual between the two teams with both defenses stepped it up allowing a combined three hits over the final four innings.
The game's ESPN moment came on the final out when Whisler made a game-ending catch in foul territory to help Western Oregon extend its home winning streak to nine straight games.
Taylor, Sullivan, and Whisler recorded the only hits for the Wolves, as Sullivan drove in a pair of runs for WOU.
Saint Martin's had five different players register a hit in the finale, while Shaw and Tracy collected two of SMU's three RBI on the afternoon.
Both teams return to the diamond tomorrow – Sunday, April 12 – to close out this weekend's four-game GNAC series beginning at noon on the WOU Baseball Field in Monmouth.
