MONMOUTH, Ore. – Alisha Bettinson had double-digits kill for the fourth time this season, but it was not quite enough for the Western Oregon volleyball team as they fell to No. 12 Alaska Anchorage in four sets – 17-25, 25-22, 16-25, 18-25 – at the New P.E. Building.
The Wolves (3-7, 0-1 GNAC) got 14 kills from Bettinson in the GNAC-opener and also got 12 kills from redshirt freshman
Amanda Short. Freshman setter
Maddie Mehciz had 36 assists while a trio –
Christie Colasurdo (18), Bettinson (12) and
Sheila Limas De La Cruz (10) – recorded more than 10 digs.
Alaska Anchorage (9-0, 1-0 GNAC) came back from an early 7-4 deficit and built a comfortable cushion with six straight points to take the opening game.
The second set saw the Wolves play their best set of the season, hitting .359 as a team (16 kills, two errors). WOU took its first lead at 9-8 and held off a late rally to get its first set win against the Seawolves since the 2013 season.
The third set saw WOU take a 6-2 lead, but UAA would take six of the next seven to move ahead. A five-point stretch on the next rotation preceded four more consecutive points to push the Seawolves' lead to 18-10. WOU could not answer with a string of points, eventually falling 25-16.
UAA closed out the match extending an 18-15 lead in the fourth set with six sequential tallies to set up match point. The Wolves fought off three times, but the final kill from Katelynn Zanders kept UAA with an unblemished record.
Both teams had three blocks on the night while UAA won the dig battle 63-54.
Western Oregon concludes its current homestand with a match against Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday at 7 p.m.
