Rocky weekend for WOU

Wolves drop last two matches at Oredigger Classic

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Western Oregon volleyball team suffered two losses in second day action at the Oredigger Volleyball Classic. In the opening morning session, the Wolves fell to the University of Findlay in straight sets (14-25, 17-25, 22-25) and concluded tournament play being swept by Minnesota State Moorhead (19-25, 13-25, 23-25).

For the day, sophomore outside hitter Alisha Bettinson paced WOU with 12 overall kills, six in each Saturday match.

MATCH 1 – Findlay 3, Western Oregon 0

Set one saw WOU take three of the first four points, but Findlay reversed course and strung four straight points to take a 5-3 lead. Later in the game, six straight from the Oilers pushed the lead to 15-6. The Wolves took possession of the serve following three successive UF service errors, but could not gain any ground, falling 25-14.

Game two played similar for the Wolves, especially a Findlay run in the middle of the set that included three straight service aces.

After falling behind 7-2 in the third set, Western Oregon strung points together on their next five rotations to take a 14-11 lead. Findlay returned to serving tough, a strategy that pulled them even with the Wolves at 15-15. An ace with score at 20-20 shifted momentum back to Findlay, who closed out the sweep.

The Wolves hit to a .242 mark, their best effort of the season. Findlay had 47 kills and only nine errors, posting an incredible .452 hitting percentage for the match.

MATCH 2 – Minnesota State Moorhead 3, Western Oregon 0

In the final match of the Oredigger Classic, WOU drew the undefeated Dragons of Minnesota State Moorhead. The teams waged a close battle in the first set with the largest MSUM lead only reaching three points. At 18-17, the Dragons posted a pair of kills while WOU committed three errors to build enough of a cushion to win the set 25-19.

Amanda Short and Paige Kelsey combined on three kills in the opening rallies on game two. MSUM responded with an eight-point string. Kaitlin VanWinkle carried the Dragons to the finish line with four late kills in a 25-13 set win.

WOU played its cleanest game of the year in the third set, putting down 12 kills while committing only one error. Freshman Maddie Mehciz moved to a hitting role and killed three rallies for a WOU 9-7 advantage. Moorhead went on a strong run to lead 22-18. With Mehciz serving, the Wolves scored four consecutive points to knot the game. Timely kills helped the Dragon complete the sweep, winning the third game, 25-23.

Minnesota-Moorhead posted a 50-32 advantage in kills and a seven-block cushion (9 to 2).

After the weekend in Colorado, the Wolves return to the New P.E. Building for their home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 8 against Lewis & Clark College. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
