Wolves roll past Clan behind Revis' Record Day

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Junior wide receiver Paul Revis broke the Western Oregon single-game records for completions and receptions yards as Western Oregon claimed an aerially impressive 33-7 victory over Simon Fraser on Saturday afternoon at McArthur Field. WOU improves to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action, while SFU falls to 0-6 and 0-4 in GNAC action.

Revis made a WOU record 17 receptions for 250 yards and a touchdown. The number of catches bested the previous mark of 16 by Cam Frickey against Central Washington in 1996. Revis' 250 yards was 25 yards better than the 2002 game posted by Brad Satran vs. San Diego.

The Wolves offense posted 401 yards of passing offense, with starting quarterback Phillip Fenumiai throwing for 116 yards on 7-of-9 passing and Nick Duckworth compiling 277 yards on 26 completions and three touchdowns.

After three scoreless drives to begin the game, Fenumiai drove the Wolves 55 yards in seven plays on the first WOU scoring possession. Fenumiai completed 3-of-3 passes for 49 yards, including a 27 yard TD pass to Revis that included a tiptoe act down the sideline for the score. Jacob Bannister added the first of his three PATs for a 7-0 lead. Simon Fraser responded with an 11-play drive and set up for 39-yard field goal. The attempt from Chad Heerspink was blocked by freshman Malik Abdul-Haqq. Three WOU drives later, Revis set up the Wolves with a short field following a 49-yard punt return. Duckworth targeted Keoni Piceno twice, once for a five-yard gain and the next drew a pass interference call. On third down, Duckworth hit Zack Suarez for an 11-yard touchdown. WOU took a 13-0 lead after a two-point pass from Revis was batted away. A late attempt from Bannister from 39 yards was blocked giving Western Oregon a 13-0 advantage at halftime. The Wolves had 192 yards of total offense in the first half, including 188 passing yards.

Western Oregon opened the second half with the ball and it appeared that the Simon Fraser defense had forced a fumble late in the drive, however, the Wolves fell on the loose ball and Duckworth hit tight end Andy Avgi in the back of the end zone to give WOU a 19-0 lead after marching 70 yards on nine plays.

The Clan got their lone points of the game from their defense. Near midfield, SFU's Gabe Lopez intercepted a Duckworth pass and ran it back 51 yards for a pick-six. The Clan sliced into the WOU lead, 19-7 at the 4:22 mark of the third quarter.

But, Western Oregon shook off the mistake and scored on the ensuing drive. Duckworth started the possession with a 44-yard pass play to Revis and again hit the receiver with a 13-yard gain that put WOU inside the five. On third down, Duckworth found his largest receiving target open, hitting Avgi with a seven-yard scoring pass and a 26-7 lead.

WOU's final scoring drive went for just 30 yards in seven plays midway in the fourth quarter. At the six and facing fourth down, WOU handed the ball to freshman tailback Torreahno Sweet who gained three yards to move the chains. After a one-yard rush on first down, Sweet got into the end zone two plays later for the final margin of 33-7.

Avgi ended with just 17 yards but hauled in two scoring passes. Piceno ended with five grabs for 51 yards while Wesley Gray made four grabs for 21 yards. Both teams finished the afternoon with negative rushing totals despite Malik Braxton leading the Wolves with 39 yards on 12 touches. Tyler Johnson had a big game on the defensive side of the ball with half of his six total tackles coming for loss, including two sacks for 15 yards. Johnson added an interception and 28 return yards from the middle of the WOU defense. Austin Spencer joined Johnson with six stops and Bo Highburger had two tackles behind the line of scrimmage. For the game, WOU had 11 tackles for loss and six sacks.

SFU was held to 163 total yards of offense. Quarterback Miles Richardson was 15-of-38 for 171 yards. Justin Buren had 68 yards receiving and Gavin Cobb added 152 all-purpose yards. Nathan Kyeame led the Clan defense with 11 tackles, covering Revis most of the game. Justin Herdman had 10 tackles while his brother Jordan Herdman added nine stops.

Western Oregon will hit the road for a league contest at Central Washington on Oct. 15 at 1 p.m.
