CHICO, Calif. – Kaylie Boschma had 14 points and
Jasmine Miller came up two rebounds short of a double-double (10 points, 8 rebounds), but after battling back from as much as 27 points down, Western Oregon could not stage a full comeback in a 74-59 loss to Sonoma State on Saturday night at the Carl's Jr. Coslet Classic.
Â
The Wolves (2-2) were outscored 27-14 in the third quarter but closed the game with a fourth-quarter advantage of 18-8 against the undefeated Seawolves (4-0) including a 9-0 run over the final 4:16. Boschma scored four points with a layup and the final make from the field for the Wolves.
Â
"Jasmine had another solid night for us and Boschma gave us great energy on both ends of the floor," WOU head coach
Holli Howard-Carpenter said.
Â
Western Oregon took their first lead with a 3-point make from
Shelby Snook midway through the first quarter. Snook had nine points and three assists in 32 minutes and was named to the Coslet Classic All-Tournament team.
Â
Sonoma State immediately responded with a 7-0 run to seize the lead they would not relinquish the rest of the game.
Â
"Sonoma came out ready to play and they set the tone in the first quarter," Howard-Carpenter said. They have some great athletes and the competed hard tonight."
Â
The Seawolves' lead increased to 10 in the second quarter, cresting at a 13-point advantage at the 1:59 mark. Western Oregon was held to 36 percent from the field in the opening half to trail 39-27 at the break.
"We struggled on the offensive end tonight and were bothered by their zone," Howard-Carpenter added. "We didn't value the ball nor did we get on the offensive glass."
Â
Sonoma State won the battle of the boards for the night 41-31 with a 12-5 advantage on the offensive glass.
Â
Western Oregon shot just 39.3 percent from the floor (22-of-56) and made 5-of-27 from behind the arc (18.5 percent). Sonoma State shots 40 percent as a team and hit 23-of-25 attempts from the foul line (92 percent).
"I'm most disappointed in our lack of focus to execute our defensive game plan," Howard-Carpenter said. "We didn't take steps forward this weekend but I know they will buckle down and get better this week."
Â
The Wolves return to the court next Saturday at 2 p.m. when it hosts Oregon Tech (5-2) in the New P.E. Building.
