Wolves lose out to Cougars, 33-8

GLENDORA, Calif. – The Wolves (3-6, 2-5) could not withstand the emotion of a host team in Azusa Pacific (9-1, 8-0) playing for an undefeated league schedule while maintaining a solid resume to make their first NCAA Division II playoffs, as the Cougars defeated Western Oregon 33-8 at Citrus Stadium on Saturday night.

Seven days separated from earning the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title, the Cougars scored on their opening drive, 12 plays for 76 yards, and never looked back as the Wolves struggled to move the ball in the first quarter.

Azusa Pacific passed for 305 of its 422 total yards with senior receivers Ethan Zeidler, Tanner Henry and Josiah Thropay each catching a touchdown pass.

Western Oregon's offense did not record a first down until freshman running back Torreahno Sweet rushed for 10 yards on the second play of a drive that stalled shy of midfield. Junior quarterback Phillip Fenumiai completed his first pass to Sweet for no gain, but did not register another in 11 more attempts into the third quarter.

Nick Duckworth checked into the game in the third quarter and WOU moved the sticks on two consecutive plays. Sweet pushed the Wolves out of the endzone's shadow with an 11-yard scamper. Duckworth then connected with Paul Revis for 11 yards.

On the next WOU drive, the running corps accounted for 36 yards including a 12-yard Sweet rush and a first down run of 15 yards from Malik Braxton. The Wolves got to the APU 10, but a 33-yard field goal attempt from Jacob Bannister leaked wide left.

Late in the fourth quarter, Western Oregon began their lone scoring drive at their own 18-yard line. After a Sweet five-yard gain and a first-down pass to completion to Revis put the ball at the 30, Duckworth again targeted Revis, who took the ball into the endzone for a 70-yard touchdown – the longest pass play for Western Oregon this season. WOU tacked on two points with the conversion as Duckworth connected with Andy Avgi.

Duckworth finished the night completing 11 of 20 passes for 165 yards. Revis made five grabs for a game-high 129 yards for his fifth game over 100 yards. He is 52 yards away from 1,000 for the season. Sweet closed the game with 11 carries for 63 yards.

Defensively, Bo Highburger was the only man with double-digit stops. He had 15 overall tackles, eight of them solo. George Swartzlender followed with eight tackles, including a sack. Jeremy Moore accounted for two quarterback sacks for a combined 16 yards. Kui Williams forced a fumble in the fourth quarter that was recovered by Danny Hankins.

WOU closes out the regular season traveling to Burnaby, B.C, Canada to face Simon Fraser on Nov. 12. The game will kickoff at 1 p.m. at Swangard Stadium.
