Full nine-inning battle results in 7-6 loss

Western Oregon splits the four-game series with the Pioneers, 2-2

Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. - In the final contest of the four-game series, Western Oregon baseball dropped to Cal State East Bay, 7-6, after the Pioneers walked off with a sacrifice fly on Sunday.

East Bay's win split the weekend series to 2-2. The Wolves are now 5-4 overall, while the Pioneers improved to 5-2.

Each team had a taste of the lead throughout the game and one run was scored in six out of the nine total innings. Overall, the Wolves tallied eight hits, while the Pioneers had 12. Senior Cody Sullivan led the Wolves with two runs, and seniors Trevor Podratz and Marcus Madden each supplied two hits. The Pioneers' senior Rudy Navarro posted three hits and a run, and senior Ryan Wheat added two hits and a run.

East Bay started off by scoring two runs right off the bat in the bottom of the first inning. Western Oregon got on the board as Sullivan blasted a homerun to left field in the second inning, while the Pioneers added another run in the bottom of the second, extending their lead to 3-1.

The Wolves tied up the game in the fourth. Redshirt junior Joey Crunkilton singled to left field and eventually ran home after a fly out. Western Oregon's second run of the inning came from Sullivan after he was hit by the pitch, and Madden's single brought him home.

In the fifth, the Wolves took the lead as redshirt junior Erik Long singled and scored after Crunkilton reached on a fielding error. However, Western Oregon only had a glimpse of the lead as the Pioneers tied the game in the bottom of the fifth and scored two more runs in the seventh.

Action-packed was the ninth inning as the Wolves stayed in the game with two runs. Madden reached on a fielding error and scored after a ground out. The visiting team tied up the contest when senior Caleb Falck singled to left center field, and junior Forrest Garcia stepped in as a pinch runner, scoring after Podratz singled to right field.

After the Wolves' campaign, East Bay earned the walk-off win after junior Daniel Goodrich's double, and a sacrifice fly allowed him to score.

On the pitcher's mound, senior Gary Steindorf started the first 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs yet striking out five. Freshman Koty Fallon took the loss after pitching 1 2/3 innings. He allowed the final run of the game.

Next up, the Wolves will open Great Northwest Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader against Concordia on Saturday, March 5.
