Chirnside Block Party Leads WOU in 85-60 Win

Junior forward sets school record against Simon Fraser on Thursday

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Junior forward JJ Chirnside broke the Western Oregon school record for blocked shots in a single game with nine and scored 12 points leading the Wolves to an 85-60 victory over Simon Fraser on Thursday night in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.

Chirnside penned his name in history at the 4:37 mark of the second half in sending away a layup by the Clan's Gibran Sewani. He was 5-of-8 from the floor, including a 3-pointer, and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.

The nine blocks were one better than the effort posted in two different games by Melvin Haynes during the 1987-88 season against Southern Oregon and Northwest Christian.

It was the Wolves' third straight victory overall (8-7, 5-2 GNAC) and the 16th consecutive win over the Clan (2-13, 0-7 GNAC) dating back to 1998.

Ali Faruq-Bey led all scorers with 20 points while adding three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Demetrius Trammell his three triples in his 13-point evening while Bryan Berg led WOU off the bench with nine points. Tanner Omlid, Evan Garrison and Isaiah Edwards all had five rebounds.

The Wolves outscored SFU 46-30 in the second half and battled back from an early deficit with a 21-0 run midway through the first half.

WOU trailed by as many eight points (21-13) with 9:43 left in the first half, but held SFU without a basket for over five minutes while hitting shots from close range to eliminate the deficit and build a double-digit advantage. Trammell hit a 3-pointer later and Garrison closed the rally with a jump shot. The Clan trimmed the WOU advantage back to single digits at the break, 39-30.

The Wolves saw the lead hover around the 10-to-13 point range until a pair of Chirnside blocks led to a Garrison driving layup and a corner triple from Chirnside that extended the lead to 20 points, 70-50. Late makes from 3-land from Malik Leaks crested the lead to 29 (85-56) in the final minute.

WOU outscored SFU 18-6 in points off turnovers in the second half and 28-8 for the game. The Wolves were 9-of-12 from the foul line and shot 49.3 percent (34-69) from the field for the night.

The Wolves resume GNAC play hosting No. 20/21 Western Washington at 7 p.m. on Saturday in the annual Red Out game.
