Five in double figures including Chirnside double-double

LACEY, Wash. – Junior forward JJ Chirnside posted career highs for his first collegiate double-double while five Western Oregon players scored in double figures to help the Wolves beat Saint Martin's 80-67 on Saturday night at Marcus Pavilion.

Chirnside finished with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting while pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds for his most prolific performance in a Western Oregon uniform.

Tanner Omlid paced the Wolves' scoring with 18 points while adding three assists, three blocks, three steals and two rebounds. Ali Faruq-Bey added 17 points and Demetrius Trammell hit four shots from downtown for his 14 points. Akil Reese had nine first-half points and closed the game with 12 points on 5-of-8 field goals.

Western Oregon (7-7, 4-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) trailed by four at the half before going on a 10-1 run. Faruq-Bey had the opening seven points in the spurt and Omlid closed out the rally with a three-point play. After a Saint Martin's (8-5, 3-3 GNAC) free throw make, the Wolves pulled away with an 8-0 run capped by a 3-point basket from Trammell.

Western Oregon got out to a good start leading 16-9 at the 11:49 mark of the first half after Bryan Berg hit a short jumper following an offensive rebound. The Wolves had problem scoring despite getting good looks. Saint Martin's took as much as a seven-point lead in the closing moments of the half until Trammell hit a triple and Faruq-Bey hit one of two charity shots.

The Wolves opened the second half strong and built the lead to 17 points, 58-41, on back-to-back 3-pointers from Chirnside. SMU trimmed the lead down to nine with one minute, but four free throws down the stretch from Trammell and Omlid maintained the Wolves' advantage.
