Saints lifted in overtime against Wolves

MONMOUTH, Ore.—Playing its sixth overtime game of the season, Western Oregon University dropped a 2-1 decision at home against Saint Martin's on Saturday.

Playing in nightmarish rainy conditions, Western Oregon (2-10-2, 1-7-2 GNAC) had a dream start to the match with a Dacia Alexander goal 94 seconds after the opening whistle. Kaili Brundage set up the play by unleashing an attempt from 15 yards on the right flank, but was denied by Saint Martin's (2-12-1, 2-7-1 GNAC) goalkeeper Ali Koehler.

Koehler prevented the initial shot but punched the ball back into play where Alexander slotted a quick strike into the net.

The Wolves continued to apply pressure for the majority of the first half, eventually generating an 8-to-1 advantage in total shots.

The second half played evenly between the two clubs before SMU found the equalizer in the 84th minute on a Dulce Armas goal.

The momentum of the late goal contained in the overtime session as Amber Burbridge scored on a free kick by Madison Walker. Positioned 30 yards from goal on the right side, Walker delivered a swooping cross where Kiersten Madsen managed a touch before Burbridge finished the play from point-blank range.

Koehler came up with six saves for the win while WOU counterpart Caitlin Kastelic stopped four SMU attempts.

The Wolves will play its final two matches of the regular season next week with a road contest at Seattle Pacific on Oct. 26 and a home match against Simon Fraser on Oct. 28.
