MONMOUTH, Ore.—Powered by its two seniors,
Meli Cortez and
Kai Mahuka, Western Oregon University defeated Simon Fraser University, 2-1, in GNAC soccer action on Saturday afternoon.
Honored before their final collegiate match, Cortez, a midfielder, notched a brace in the second half while Makuka led a Western Oregon (3-11-2, 2-8-2 GNAC) defense let stifled the Simon Fraser attack (7-9-0, 5-7-0 GNAC) for the season-finale victory.
After a scoreless first half, Cortez broke the stalemate moments after the break with a one-timer from close range after receiving a feed by teammate
Dacia Alexander.
Cortez returned in the 62nd minute with a header to the left side of the net via a cross from
Kaili Brundage to give the Wolves the 2-0 advantage.
"Meli had a senior spectacular kind of day. Her second goal with a diving header was a pretty special moment," head coach
Steve Ancheta said.
Simon Fraser was held to five shots in the second half and cut into the deficit in the 69th minute on an Allyson Dickson goal.
With Mahuka managing the back line and goalkeeper
Caitlin Kastelic patrolling the net, the Wolves allowed just two shots the rest of the match to preserve the win.
"Kai has been in a zone back here for six or seven matches and she again showcased her ability on the back line. We have been stingy on defense lately and Kai has been a major force in that," Ancheta said.
Kastelic recorded a total of seven saves in the contest while counterpart Priya Sandhu had three saves for the Clan.
"The tone was great from the start," Ancheta said. "Even with some of our tough overtime losses, this team always comes in with the right attitude and never quits. They played some of their best soccer the last couple of weeks and they deserved that reward today."
