Cavs protect Portland court with 3-0 win versus Wolves

PORTLAND, Ore.—Seizing the momentum from the start, Concordia University defeated Western Oregon University, 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-17), in GNAC volleyball action on Tuesday night.

Concordia (7-7, 2-5 GNAC) jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first set never looked back en route to the win in the opener.

Looking to square the match in the second set, Western Oregon (5-9, 1-6 GNAC) enjoyed three separate three-point leads early, the latest on a Jenna Compton kill for an 8-5 score. Concordia returned to take the lead at 10-9 on back-to-back aces by setter Michelle Brown. The Wolves regained the lead in the second set at 18-17 with an Alisha Bettinson kills and the two team's would go on to tie the set at 22, 23 and 24 before the Cavaliers completed the win via a Colby Barnette kill for the lead and a Barnette block on set point.

Overall, the Cavs gained a 7-to-2 in total blocks with Tori Johnson accounting for four such rejections.

Nursing a 17-16 lead I the third, Concordia closed out the match with an 8-1 run.

Hitting a robust .410 on the night, Mariella Vandenkooy powered the WOU offense with 19 of the team's 39 kills.

Colby Barnett (12 kills) and Lindsay Dorsey (10 kills) led the Concordia attack as the only other players in double figures.

Three Wolves tallied at least 10 digs in Libbie Hoene (16), Myla Norvell (11) and Leila Holt (11). Holt also recorded a match-high 36 assists in the contest.

Western Oregon will stay at home for its next match as they welcome Montana State Billings on Saturday, Oct. 7. Opening serve is set for 2 p.m. at the New P.E. Building.
