MONMOUTH, Ore.—Behind the duo of seniors Lindsey Dorsey and Colby Barnette, Concordia University defeated Western Oregon, 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-19) in a Halloween match inside the New P.E. Building on Tuesday.
With the win, Concordia improved to 10-12 on the season and 5-10 in GNAC play. Western Oregon fell to 6-16 overall and 2-13 in league contests.
The Wolves will turn around and travel to face Montana State University Billings for a Thursday affair against the Yellowjackets. Opening serve is set for 7 p.m. (MT) at the Alterowitz Gymnasium.
With neither team crating much separation, the two teams traded jabs in the opening set. The Wolves tied the set at 22-22 on a Leila Holt-assisted kill by Sierra Stultz, but back-to-back points from the road team left little room for error.
Stultz returned with another kill to close to 24-23 before a CU swing by Colbya Barnette ended the opener.
Stultz and Jenna Compton provided early leads for the Wolves in the second set, but Concordia buckled down defensively, holding WOU to a .079 hit percentage, en route to the matches- most decisive win.
Tied 11-11 in the third, CU rattled off six straight points with Barnette doing the bulk of the damage. Western Oregon stayed with a pair of points, first at 20-18 and again at 21-19, but could not sustain the momentum for a lead change as the Cavs completed the three-set win with the final four points of the match.
In addition to a match-high 18 digs, Dorsey led all attackers with an even dozen kills and was followed by 11 terminations from Barnette. Alisha Bettinson led WOU with seven kills on 34 attacks. Libbie Hoenie led WOU with 12 digs while Madde Mehciz posted a team-high 16 assists.
