ELLENSBURG, Wash.—Despite being out shot 13-to-1 in the first half, the Western Oregon University women's soccer team came out firing after the break en route to a 2-0 win at Central Washington University on Saturday.
With the win, Western Oregon improved to 2-7-1 on the season and 1-4-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The win also boosts WOU's road record to 2-2-0 on the season. Central Washington, meanwhile, fell to 1-7-3 on the year and 0-4-2 in GNAC play.
In the opening seconds of the second half,
Kennedy Clay doubled WOU's shot total with an on-target connection that was denied by CWU goalkeeper Emily Holt. Holt's save propelled the ball into the crossbar and back to the field where
Sydney Thomas was able to put back the ricochet into the net with a header from tree yards out.
The goal was Thomas' first of the season.
Continuing the advance,
Meli Cortez made it a 2-0 contest with a long-ranged shot that was directed into the netting of the far post in the 55th minute.
Cortez' goal, her second of the year, represented the first time the Wolves scored multiple goals in a game since Sept. 10.
Cortez was also responsible for WOU's lone attempt in the first half with an on-target strike that was corralled by Holt in the 35th minute
Picking up the win,
Caitlin Kastelic notched three saves in each half for the Wolves.
Overall, CWU finished with an 18-to-4 advantage in shots with all four of WOU's attempts credited as on goal.
