MONMOUTH, Ore.—Jumping out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter, the Western Oregon University women's basketball team soared to a 70-50 win against Cal State San Bernardino to close out the Hampton Inn DII Shootout on Sunday.
Savannah Heugly provided back-to-back jumpers for Western Oregon (2-0) to give the hosts an early 9-2 advantage. The gap swelled to 11 (19-8) on a
Shelby Snook 3-pointer and the Wolves never looked back en route to the wire-to-wire win.
The Wolves continued to pull away before the break, eventually settling on a 40-22 lead at the break.
Cal State San Bernardino (1-1) never got closer than that 18-point deficit as the Wolves were nearly perfect from the free throw line after hitting 24-of-26 from the stripe for a 92.3 percent rate.
"We got off to a solid start today and stayed locked in on our game plan," WOU head coach
Holli Howard-Carpenter said. "Our defensive focus and effort tonight was on point and that started in film this morning. Offensively, we attacked well and were able to convert from the free throw line."
Four Wolves reached double figures in scoring with Snook and
Sydney Azorr sharing the game high with 15 points each. Heugly and
Maddy Pape followed with a dozen points each.
In addition to the proficiency at the free throw line, WOU connected on 6-of-14 (42.9 percent) from 3-point range while the Coyotes failed to convert from distance in nine chances.
The Wolves also outworked CSUSB on the glass for a 45-35 advantage with Snook and
Kaylie Boschma each pulling down eight boards to lead the team. In an all-around performance, Snook added a game-high four assists.
"Sydney's early 3-pointers and early post touches for Savannah got us going and gave us great energy," Howard-Carpenter said. "Despite some foul trouble in the third, we were able to hang on to our lead. Maddy was a big part of that by being aggressive off the bench for us on both ends of the floor."
The Wolves will return to action on Friday, Nov. 17 by traveling to face Notre Dame de Namur. Opening tip is set for 1 p.m. in Belmont, California.
