Trammell powers Wolves past Azusa Pacific

MONMOUTH, Ore.—Knocking down 6-of-8 shots from distance, senior guard Demetrius Trammell scored a team-high 24 points to lead Western Oregon University to a 99-87 win over Azusa Pacific University to end the first day of action at the Doubletree by Hilton DII Shootout on Friday.

In addition to the exploits from 3-point range, Trammell delivered on all four of his attempts from the free throw line to score his 24 points on just 10 field goal attempts to lead Western Oregon to a 3-0 start to the season.

Azusa Pacific fell to 2-1 on the year with the loss.  Azusa Pacific will play Eastern New Mexico University in Saturday's opener at 12:30 p.m. while Western Oregon will take on Dixie State (Utah) at 3 p.m. Dixie State defeated ENMU, 99-89, in an opening contest of the tournament.The Wolves managed a one-point lead at the break with the score resting at 43-42, but needed only six minutes to stretch the advantage to double digits in the second half.

Added to a pair of 3-pointers early in the second, Trammell came up with a steal that led to a fast-break layup for teammate Darius Lubom to for a 50-44 gap. Moments later, Riley Hawken came up with a swipe and fed the ball back to Lubom for another layup on the break. Now playing with the lead, the Wolves fed Vince Boumann down low where

Boumann netted six straight points for the team before a 3-pointer by Malik Morgan extended the lead to 16.

Boumann returned with a layup at the 6:20 mark to give the Wolves their biggest lead of the day at 80-61 before settling for the 11-point win.

Boumann ended the night with 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting while Tanner Omlid (15 points), JJ Chirnside (10) and Janvier Alaby (10) all reached double figures in scoring.

APU's Darien McClain led all players with 32 points on 8-of-13 shooting.
