Cougars overcome slow start for 41-16 win at WOU

MONMOUTH, Ore.—Trailing after the first quarter, Azusa Pacific University outscored Western Oregon 21-0 in the second en route to a 41-16 win in GNAC football action at McArthur Field on Saturday afternoon.

Battling for a postseason spot, Azusa Pacific improved to 6-4 on the season and 4-4 in GNAC action with the win. Western Oregon fell to 2-8 overall and 1-6 in conference contests. The Wolves will close out the year at home against Simon Fraser on Nov. 11. Kick off for Senior Day is set for 1:05 p.m.

The Wolves generated touchdowns on two of their first three possessions to stake a 13-7 lead. Devon Fortier opened the account with an 8-yard run at the 9:57 mark.

APU retaliated immediately with a 58-yard strike by Darrell Adams to Tyrone Williams while Paul Revis caught a 2-yard toss from Nick Duckworth seconds before the end of the first quarter to regain the lead for the home team.

From there on out, however, Azusa Pacific's defense stiffened by forcing five punts and stopping the Wolves on downs on three occasions. The APU offense, meanwhile, generated a pair of lengthy drives in the second half to consume the clock and maintain the advantage.

Kurt Scoby capped the Cougars' final two scoring drives with touchdown runs, the first from 19 yards out and the second via a 1-yard plunge following a goal line stop by the APU defense.

Scoby ended the day with 107 yards rushing on 20 attempts. WOU's Fortier edged Scoby for the top tally of the day with 105 yards on 18 carries for a 5.4 average on the ground.

Williams threw for 325 yards and four touchdowns after completing 19-of-29 passes. Duckworth recorded 243 yards on 20-of-47 passing with the one touchdown to Revis.

Bo Highburger led the WOU defense with 15 stops, including seven of the unassisted variety.
