MONMOUTH, Ore.—Knocking down 18 shots from long distance, the Western Oregon University men's basketball team topped Corban University 109-86 in an exhibition match inside the New P.E. Gymnasium on Monday.
The Wolves will open the regular season this week by hosting the GNAC/Pac West Challenge. WOU will join Saint Martin's, Point Loma and Fresno Pacific for the four-game, three-day tournament. The Wolves will open the year against Point Loma for a 7:30 p.m. match on Friday.
Five players reached double figures in scoring against the Warriors with Vince Boumann leading the way with 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting.
Tanner Omlid, the preseason GNAC Player of the Year, ended the night with 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
The Wolves connected on 51.4 percent (18 of 35) from 3-point distance with Omlid,
Riley Hawken,
Demetrius Trammell and Dustin Triano all converting multiple attempts from beyond the arc.
Corban posted the opening basket in the game with an AJ Monterossi jumper, but a Hawken's 3-pointer erased the advantage. Hawken had two more 3-point makes over the course of the first three minutes of play and was joined in the long-ranged attack by Trammell and low-post scoring by Boumann to quickly gain a double-digit advantage (26-15) in the first half.
In all, the Wolves trailed for a mere 14 seconds in the opening moments before pulling away by as many as 33 points in the second half.
