MONMOUTH, Ore.—With six different players contributing at least nine points, No. 16-ranked Western Oregon University defeated the University of Alaska Fairbanks, 81-60, in wire-to-wire fashion in GNAC men's basketball action on Tuesday night.
With the team's fourth straight win to close out the calendar year, Western Oregon improved to 11-1 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. Omlid and
Demetrius Trammell all connected from beyond the 3-point arc in the opening stages. Dustin Triano got into the act with a 3-pointer of this own at the 5:57 mark to give WOU's its largest lead of the half at 36-17.
Capped by free throw makes by Alex Baham, Alaska went on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to nine (36-27) only to see the Wove retaliate with a 8-0 run of their own for a 17-point lead at the break.
The lead never dipped below 14 points and expanded to as many as 30 points late in the second half.
Overall, the Wolves connected on 13 attempts from 3-point range to hit at least 10 from distance for the seventh time this season.
"I'm proud of the start the guys got today and was really pleased with how Vince (Boumann) played by being able to pass out of the double teams which provided great opportunities for his teammates," WOU head coach
Jim Shaw said.
Buomann finished with 10 points and seven rebounds while handing out five assists. Hawken led the squad with 11 points while Omlid, Trammell,
Janvier Alaby and Malik Morgan finished with nine points each.
Omlid added a game-high nine rebounds in addition to four assists, two blocks and a steal.
WOU will return to action on Jan. 2 when it travels north to Portland for a 7 p.m. tilt against Concordia.
"We're excited to get the guys healthy and see what this team can do after Christmas," Shaw said.
