BURNABY, B.C. – Simon Fraser outscored the Western Oregon men's basketball team 22-13 after junior forward
Tanner Omlid fouled out to seize momentum and win their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference of the season, 68-63, Saturday night at the West Gym.
Â
The loss was the first for the Wolves (13-11, 10-6 GNAC) in Burnaby since the 1998-99 season and broke a winning streak of 16 games in the series.
Â
How It Happened
Simon Fraser raced out to a 10-2 lead after the Wolves missed their opening eight shots from the floor. WOU battled back with a 9-0 run sparked by a layup from Omlid and seven straight tallied by junior guard
Bryan Berg on a lay-up, a 3-pointer and a dunk.
Â
After Kedar Wright hit a shot to trim the lead back down to two, Western Oregon went on an 8-0 run to build a 26-16 lead. Omlid had the first five points while junior guard
Demetrius Trammell nailed a triple. A late 7-0 Clan run was stopped after a layup from redshirt freshman guard
Isaiah Edwards for the Wolves to lead by five, 32-27, at the break.
Â
In the second half, the WOU effort to build an eight-point advantage at the 14:51 mark was quickly erased by the first major push by the Clan to pull even at 43-43.
Â
The momentum of the game swung to the home team after Omlid's fifth personal foul despite a pair of free throws from junior
Ali Faruq-Bey putting the Wolves up 52-46 with 8:24 left.
Â
Simon Fraser took a lead with a 9-1 spurt and never saw Western Oregon get closer than two points the rest of the way.
