PORTLAND, Ore. – Tanner Omlid scored 19 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds as Western Oregon dropped its final road game of the regular season, losing at Concordia, 69-67, on Tuesday evening.
Â
Concordia snapped Western Oregon's win streak at two games before a good crowd at LCEF Court, as Jarrett Gray drilled two free throws with 22 seconds to play in the second half for the Cavaliers (13-13, 9-10 GNAC) to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Â
The loss officially sealed the three-seed in the upcoming GNAC Championship for Western Oregon (15-12, 12-7 GNAC) since no team fighting for the final three playoff spots cannot catch WOU and Alaska Anchorage holds the tiebreaker over the Wolves if the teams ended tied in the league standings.
Â
Gray's free-throws helped the Cavs to the 17
th lead change in the game and post a game-high 26 points on 10-of-13 shooting and 5-of-5 from the foul line. The Wolves had three different looks to tie or win the game in the final 10 seconds. The rebound off a missed Omlid jumper was batted out to
Demetrius Trammell, who missed a 3-pointer short. His carom went
Evan Garrison who found
JJ Chirnside for a corner triple try that missed to seal the Cavaliers' win.
Â
Omlid connected on 8-of-19 shots to lead the Wolves in scoring while adding five steals and four assists.
Ali Faruq-Bey totaled 16 points and Chirnside added 12 points.
Â
Concordia extended its win streak to three games on Wednesday.
Â
Leading by five at the half, 39-34, Omlid's quick lay-in gave the Wolves their biggest lead 14 seconds into the second half. Five minutes later, a jumper in the paint by Gray gave Concordia the lead.
Â
Concordia and the Wolves battled back and forth until Gray's three-point play pushed the hosts' lead to 67-63. Omlid went on a 4-0 run with a tip-in and two clutch free throws to tie the game with 44 seconds left in regulation before the final Gray charity shots.
Â
Like most of the game, WOU and Concordia in the first half had 10 ties and 10 lead changes. Western Oregon seized momentum heading into the break with a 7-0 run with an Omlid 3-pointer and successive dunks by Chirnside following steals.
Â
Western Oregon returns to action against Montana State Billings on Saturday, Feb. 25 at home. Game time at the New P.E. Building is 7 p.m. (PT) and will have a pregame ceremony honoring the four seniors on the team – Garrison,
Yanick Kulich,
Connor Thompson and
Dezmond Dupree-Turner.
