SEATTLE – Despite a game-high 20 points from junior
Shelby Snook, the Western Oregon women's basketball team fell to Seattle Pacific 70-60 in the Wolves' regular-season finale Saturday afternoon at Brougham Pavilion.
Â
Snook's performance coupled a solid game from
Jasmine Miller with 12 points and seven rebounds allowed the duo to each end the season averaging more than 10 points. Snook finished with a season average of 13.6 points while Miller hit a 10-point average right on the mark.
Â
"Jasmine and Shelby shot the ball with confidence tonight and got us off to a great start," WOU head coach
Holli Howard-Carpenter said. "Savannah had a great second half and was a big part of
our late push."
Â
Heugly tied with
Sydney Azorr as the team's third-leading scorer with eight points each. Heugly was 4-of-5 from the floor in 14 minutes while Azorr ripped down eight rebounds.
Â
Western Oregon (8-19, 4-16 GNAC) played a nearly even first quarter with the Falcons (18-10, 10-10 GNAC) as a late SPU 3-pointer gave the hosts an 18-15 advantage after the first quarter.
Â
Two Snook jumpers trimmed the SPU lead to one on two early occasions in the second quarter, but the Wolves missed five consecutive field goals, including four from 3-point distance, and had two turnovers during a Falcon 8-0 run for a 28-19 lead. The teams traded field goals before a dry stretch over the final 1:56 of the half in Seattle Pacific taking a 30-22 advantage into the locker room.
Â
The Wolves started to connect from behind the 3-point arc in trimming the SPU lead to five on three different occasions in the third quarter, but the Falcons had responses every time. Heugly's jumper at the 4:08-mark was answered by a 6-0 SPU run to build the lead up to 11, 46-35. Heugly closed the period with a pair of jump shots to trail by seven, 51-44.
Â
Miller connected on a short jumper after two offensive boards on the first possession of the fourth quarter to get Western Oregon within five, but Seattle Pacific got a pair of 3-pointers to build the lead back to double figures and held off the Wolves.
Â
"I'm disappointed we didn't finish with a win, of course, but proud of how hard we played tonight and all this year," Howard-Carpenter said. "It went way too fast and I'm sad it's over. We have a lot coming back and I'm excited for the spring to start. It's time to get some rest and get ourselves healthy with one thing in mind for next season."
