Wolves look to extend early GNAC lead

The first matchup for Oregon Division II baseball bragging rights commences this weekend when the Western Oregon baseball team travels to Portland for a four-game series against Concordia this Saturday and Sunday. The series begins Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. on the turf at Porter Park.

WOLVES AGAINST THE CAVALIERS
Last season, the Wolves took six of the eight games played against Concordia. Each team took two games during an early March series in Portland while the Wolves swept a four-game set in Monmouth in April. Western Oregon holds a 65-21 all-time advantage in the series.

LAST WEEK FOR THE WOLVES
 Western Oregon won the conference opening series against Montana State Billings, but has not completed the sweep. The Wolves won the first three games and led 7-0 in the fourth game, when it was halted for darkness. The game will be finished when Western Oregon goes to Montana State Billings in April.Western Oregon now leads the GNAC standings with a 3-0 conference record as the Wolves look to get back to their winning ways. They won the first 13 GNAC regular season titles in a row before narrowly missing the title each of the last two years. Justin Wakem remains the Wolves' leader in batting average at .455 thanks to his 10 singles this season. He also has an on-base percentage of .556. Wakem leads the GNAC in both categories. Defending GNAC Pitcher of the Year Brady Miller picked up his first win of the year with six innings pitched with one earned run allowed. He struck out nine batters and allowed only three hits. Elias Bedolla picked up the second win with 4.1 shutout innings with three strikeouts. Cam Walker entered the game in relief to retire the last three batters and earn his first save of the season. Shawn Domke retired five of six batters faced and has not allowed a run in two appearances this season.
 
CAVALIER NOTES
Concordia split with Northwest Nazarene in the opening weekend of GNAC play, winning the second two games of the four-game series after getting swept in the Friday doubleheader. Jake Brewer picked up his first win of the season in the third game of the series. Brewer threw a one-run complete-game with 12 strikeouts and just six hits allowed. In the series finale, Sam Gillenwater threw five innings of two-run ball to pick up his first win of the year. Ryan Caylor came in for the final six outs, getting four of them with strikeouts to earn the save in the 6-2 victory. Eddie Vasquez missed the first three series of the season before making his 2017 debut against Northwest Nazarene. The sophomore went 7 for 9 with a walk and a home run in the series to be named GNAC Player of the Week. Leadoff hitter Cole Crosby is batting .333 this season, which leads the Cavaliers. Crosby has a double and two triples along with six walks and a hit by pitch to raise his on-base percentage to .415. James Brooks got his first start of the season after four successful relief appearances to start the season. Brooks walked seven batters and hit one by a pitch, giving up six runs in 4.1 innings. Brooks still leads the Cavaliers in ERA at 3.63 in five outings this season.

ATOP THE GNAC PACK
Western Oregon has finished either the league champion or league runner-up for 15 consecutive seasons. Under Kellen Walker, WOU won the league championship in 2014 and 2015 while making it to the GNAC Championship game in 2016.
 
PRESEASON RANKS
Western Oregon baseball was selected by the league's coaches to finish second behind defending league champion Northwest Nazarene in the race for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title in 2017. In the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association vote, Western Oregon ranked in a tie for tenth with NNU. Brady Miller was named to the West Region First Team and took home third-team preseason All-American honors from the same group.
 
WALKER IN YEAR FIVE
Head coach Kellen Walker is his fifth year at the helm of the Wolves. Walker had led WOU to a 128-91 overall record in his tenure, including a 94-45 mark in GNAC competition.
 
ROSTER BREAKDOWN
Western Oregon's 37-man opening day active roster features nine seniors, 15 juniors, four sophomores and nine freshmen. The Wolves are a geographically diverse team with six stats represented. Twelve players hail from Oregon and nine from California. The states of Arizona and Washington each have six players while Nevada is represented by three and Hawaii has one.

UP NEXT ... 
The Wolves return home for a non-conference game against Corban on Wednesday, March 15 before hosting Central Washington beginning March 18 for a GNAC series.
