PORTLAND, Ore. – Offense came at a premium for the Western Oregon University baseball team, as the Wolves dropped both games of Sunday's series-opening doubleheader to Central Washington, 6-3 and 4-0. The Wolves (7-5, 6-2 GNAC) were limited to nine hits over 16 innings in the pair of losses.
Â
Central Washington (11-9, 5-5 GNAC) got to WOU starter
Brady Miller in the third scoring three runs on three consecutive RBI doubles. A two-out solo home run in the fourth off
Jake Simmons bumped the lead to 4-0 before WOU could answer back.
Â
Forrest Garcia reached base in the home half of the fourth with a walk and moved to second after
Jay Leverett was hit by an inside pitch. A two-out single up the box from
Joey Crunkilton plated Garcia, cutting the Wildcats' lead to three. In the next inning,
Torreahno Sweet led off with a line drive hit to center. On the next pitch,
Justin Wakem doubled to left field scoring Sweet to make it a 4-2 game.
Â
CWU's Connor Plaisance hit his second home run of the day, a two-run blast to left center, in the seventh to build the advantage back to four before a Sweet groundball pushed Crunkilton across in the eight for the Wolves' final run.
Â
Miller took the loss (1-2), allowing three runs on seven hits, while fanning three.
Â
Central Washington jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after Plaisance took the first pitch from reliever
Connor McCord in right center field emptying the previously filled bags for a three-run double.
Â
The Wildcats added an insurance run in the seventh backing a strong start from southpaw Mackenzie Gaul. He surrendered a pair of hits in the first inning, but buckled down and scattered just two more hits to the Wolves the rest of the game.
Â
Brock Pradere had a pair of hits for the Wolves in the second game.
Elias Bedolla was credited with the three early runs against the Wildcats and got the loss (1-3), allowing one hit while striking out three in 2 1/3 innings.
Â
The Wolves close out the four-game set with CWU on Monday at Porter Park on the campus of Concordia-Portland with first pitch set for 11 a.m.
