SB | Wolves sweep Simon Fraser with dramatic comeback

HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Western Oregon softball team took both games in Monday's doubleheader against Simon Fraser to begin a busy eight-game week using a solid complete game from senior Sammi Cadwallader to win game one, 2-1, before mounting a ferocious comeback to down the Clan, 9-8, in game two. The twinbill sweep improves Western Oregon to 21-16 on the season and brings the Wolves to the .500-mark in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play at 8-8.

GAME ONE – Western Oregon 2, Simon Fraser 1
All of the run-scoring offense came in the opening frame. Simon Fraser got on the board with a one-out RBI double from Taylor Lundrigan. Destiny Kuehl and Chandler Bishop drove in runs with sacrifice flies in the bottom of the first after Ryanne Huffman singled, Gabriella Alonso walked and both moved up via a wild pitch.

Sammi Cadwallader allowed just one hit in the second through fourth innings and got out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the fifth inning after forcing a runner at home on a comebacker and striking out the next batter to end the threat. She retired the last eight batters she faced to earn her seventh win of the season after allowing a run on five hits with four strikeouts.

WOU was out hit five to three for the game despite a 2 for 3 performance from Ashlee Lynch.

GAME TWO – Western Oregon 9, Simon Fraser 8
The second game looked to be an early Simon Fraser rout as the Clan scored in each of the first four innings to take a 7-0 lead.

The teams traded runs in the home half of the fifth and the visiting half of the sixth. Zoe Clark tripled leading off the inning and scored on a fly out from Ku'ulei Siolo to center field cutting the SFU advantage to 7-1. Lundrigan nailed a pitch over the wall in left field to reestablish a seven-run cushion.

WOU began their comeback with four runs on six hits against two Simon Fraser pitchers in the bottom of the sixth inning. Hailee Watilo and Kuehl each singled to set the foundation for the rally. Bishop lifted a high pop-up into shallow center that fell between two defenders for a RBI double. Ashley Doyle followed two batters later with another two-bagger that plated Jenna Kelly. Zoe Clark and Cheyanne Rimer added the final two RBI singles making the SFU lead, 8-5.

The offensive outburst continued in the final frame when Watilo drove a ground-rule double to right-center putting herself into scoring position for Bishop in a pinch-hitting role. The switch proved to be the right decision as Bishop doubled to right field making it a two-run game at 8-6. Lynch singled and Doyle doubled to cut the lead to one and put the tying and winning runs on the bases. Clark tied the game with a single back up the middle and Siolo ended the game with a single through the circle into centerfield.

Lizzet Dominguez battled to a win after allowing eight, five earned, on 10 hits with one strikeout to move to 3-3.
