SALEM, Ore.—Overcoming two separate deficits, Biola University (Calif.) stunned Western Oregon University, 3-2, in the second overtime of the women's soccer season opener for both teams on Thursday.
Playing under a cloudless sky and the turf at the Capital FC Soccer Complex, Biola's (1-0-0) Sarah Jeffries directed the game-winner in the 104th minute after a cross on the right side by teammate Samantha Verduzco.
Western Oregon (0-1-0) opened the game's scoring in the 14th minute on a
Dana Jacobs penalty kick following a foul on Biola goalkeeper Christina Rodriguez, who came out of the goal box to break up a fast break moments earlier.
The Eagles knotted the match in the 25th minute, shortly after both teams vacated the field for a quick water break due to the high temperatures in the region. Verduzco found space deep inside the 6-yard box and squeezed a ball past WOU keeper
Caitlin Kastelic.
The Wolves regained the lead before the half, however, as
Alexie Morris and
Kennedy Clay worked a combination from right to left to set up a 15-yard shot by Kennedy at the 39:24 mark.
After outshooting the visitors 7 to 3 in the first half, WOU did not register an attempt the rest of the way as the Eagles equalized once again, this time on a WOU own goal in the 71st minute after a dangerous cross ricocheted back into the net.
In addition to a 9 to 7 overall shot advantage, Biola generated 13 corner kicks compared to three for the Wolves.
WOU will return to the pitch on Saturday by hosting San Francisco State University. Kick off against the Gators is set for 1 p.m. at Central High School in Independence, Ore.
