MONMOUTH, Ore.—Scoring the tying goal in the 88th minute, Western Oregon University managed a 1-1 tie at home against Montana State Billings on Saturday afternoon.
Western Oregon (1-5-1, 0-1-1 GNAC) nearly put a goal on the board in the opening minute with a fast-break by
Meli Cortez but denied by MSU Billings (1-5-1, 0-1-1 GNAC) goalkeeper Erinn Harder.
Despite being outshot 8 to 2 in the first half, the Yellowjackets responded in the 23rd minute with a lofted header from the left side by Amanda Hemmen after a long delivery from Alexa Iacolucci.
The numbers were reversed in the second half with WOU generating just five shots to MSUB's nine, but the Wolves were able to capitalize in the waning moments when
Dacia Alexander worked the ball down the right flank. Turning inside, Alexander unleashed an attempt from 16 yards that Harder pushed up for the save but a caromed off the crossbar back into play.
Waiting for the arrival on the left side,
Meli Cortez deftly taped the equalizer into the net.
Both teams created decent chances at the golden goal in the two overtime sessions, only for the counterparts in goal to come through with denials.
Harden ended the game with dive saves while WOU netminder
Caitlin Kastelic stopped nine MSUB attempts.
The Wolves will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 26 when they host Concordia University. Kick off is set for 3 p.m. at WOU Soccer Field.
