Falcons escape in overtime at WOU

MONMOUTH, Ore.—Scoring late to tie the game, Seattle Pacific University went on to defeat Western Oregon University, 2-1, with a golden goal in the 103rd minute on Saturday afternoon.

With the result, Seattle Pacific improved to 6-3-0 on the season and rebounded from a loss at Concordia on Thursday to move to 4-1-0 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action. The Falcons were ranked No. 6 in the NCAA DII West Region last week.

Western Oregon fell to 1-7-1 overall and 0-4-1 in GNAC contests. The Wolves will head out on the road for their next four matches, beginning with an Oct. 7 tilt at Central Washington University.

Playing in a heavy downpour throughout the first half, the Wolves created multiple chances to break the Falcon backline early. WOU generated a pair of corner kick opportunities and three of the team's five shots in the first 25 minutes of play and were rewarded with an Amber Whitmore goal in the 23rd minute. Covering the carom of a shot by Alexie Morris on the right side of the goal, Whitmore calmly drove the ball into the net for the 1-0 lead.

The Falcons outshot the home side 18-to-5 in regulation and found the equalizer in the 84th minute with an acrobatic flick from Kasey Reeve after a looping through ball from Julia DeVere.

SPU did not allow a shot attempt over the final 65 minutes of play and landed game winner in the opening moments of the second overtime via a fast break that led to a Sydnee Smith shot that coursed directly at the right post. With the ball bouncing back into the 8-yard box, Sophia Chilczuk collected the rebound and tapped in the golden goal from five yards out.
