MONMOUTH, Ore.—Taking the final three sets, including the last two that went past the 25th point, Chaminade University defeated Western Oregon University, 3-1 (18-25, 25-18,27-25, 26-24), in the middle day of action of the DII West Region Showcase on Friday.
With the result, Chaminade improved to 3-3 on the season while Western Oregon fell to 3-2. Chaminade is now 3-0 in the tournament and will face Cal State East Bay (1 pm) on Saturday. Western Oregon slipped to 1-1 in their own gymnasium this week and will play the morning match (10:30 am) against Fresno Pacific before closing out the 12-match event against CSU East Bay at 6:30 p.m.
The Wolves held Chaminade to a match-low .086 hit rate to take the opener, 25-18. The Silver Swords responded with a 25-18 win of their own to even the match and held off the home side in the final two sets to claim the win.
WOU generated two opportunities at set point in the third before CU's Emma Tecklenburg and Brooke Bell came through with set-saving kills. Bell came back with another kill to give Chaminade a 26-25 advantage and its first chance at set point, where the Silver Swords forced an attacking error to claim the victory.
WOU led as late as 23-22 in the fourth only to see CU post back-to-back points for their first chance at match point with the score 24-23. The WOU defense stepped on to knot the game at 24-all, but kills by Kira Long and Rachel Reedy prevented a fifth-set showdown.
WOU's
Alisha Bettinson led all players with 19 kills while Tecklenburg led CU with 15 terminations.
