ANCHORAGE, Alaska—Scoring the first seven points and compiling a 20-point lead at the half, the No 6-ranked Seawolves of the University of Alaska Anchorage defeated Western Oregon University, 85-53, in GNAC women's basketball action on Thursday night.
With the win, the team's 27th straight in GNAC competitions, UAA improved to 14-1 on the season and 7-0 in league play. WOU, coming off a win at home against Western Washington last week, fell to 6-7 on the year and 2-5 in the GNAC standings.
WOU will continue its trip through the Last Frontier with a Jan. 13 game at Alaska Fairbanks. Opening tip against the Nanooks is set for 1 p.m. (AKST) on Saturday.
Savannah Heugly scored WOU's first eight points of the game to keep things close in the first (13-8). Minutes later,
Kennedy Corrigan connected on a 3-pointer to stay within six (23-17) at the end of the first, but a dominating ensuing quarter pushed the deficit to 20 as the Seawolves held WOU to just nine points in the period.
Heugly ended the night with a team-high 14 points on 6-of-14 shooting while Corrigan added 11 points after hitting 3-of-7 from beyond the 3-point line.
Jasmine Miller added eight points and a team-high seven rebounds.
UAA was led by the trio of Kian McNair (15 points), Kaitlyn Hurley (13 points) and Hannah Wandersee (12 points).
The Wolves outrebounded UAA 40-31 while the Seawolves forced 24 turnovers compared to committing just 12 miscues on the night.
