BILLINGS, Mont.—Clinging to a one-point lead entering the fourth quarter, Montana State University Billings used a 12-2 run to start the fourth en route to a 65-56 win at Western Oregon University on Thursday evening.
Montana State Billings (13-6, 6-3 GNAC) held the home team to 26.2 percent shooting on the night, the lowest rate of the season for Western Oregon (8-8, 4-6 GNAC).
Looking for their third start win, Western Oregon kept pace with the Yellowjackets through the first 30 minutes of play by using stout defense of their own and dominating the action on the glass. Overall, WOU finished with a 52-to-38 edge in total rebounds with senior guard
Sydney Azorr snaring a career-best 11 boards.
"We had a slow start, played a solid second and third quarter but just didn't have enough in the tank to finish it," WOU head coach
Holli Howard-Carpenter said. "We hit our marks on the defensive end, gave ourselves extra opportunities and knocked down our free throws but it wasn't enough to overcome our poor shooting from the field."
Azorr also scored a team-high 11 points but saw her school record streak of consecutive free throw makes come to an end. Azorr went 6-of-10 from the free throw line in the team's season opener way back on Nov. 17 and went 13 complete games without a miss from the charity stripe for a run of 45 consecutive makes.
The streak is the third longest in GNAC history. Jamey Gelhar of Saint Martin's (2008-09) holds the GNAC record with 78 straight conversions while Seattle Pacific's Suzanna Ohlsen connected on 49 straight in 2014.
Alisha Breen, the GNAC leader at 20.4 points per game, ended the night with a game-high 19 points on 5-of-12 shooting. Teammate Rylee Kane added 16 for the Yellowjackets.
"Our focus and execution on offense was absolutely unacceptable, we are much better than we played tonight and that is disappointing. Our spacing and screen setting was non-existent and that led to poor shot selection," Howard-Carpenter said. "Credit goes to Billings, they were grinding tonight and got baskets when they needed them."
WOU will return to action on Jan. 25 with a home game versus Northwest Nazarene University. Opening tip is set for 7 p.m.
