MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Central Washington Wildcats spoiled Western Oregon soccer's Senior Day with a 1-0 win on the back of Emily Russell's second goal of the season Thursday at WOU Soccer Field.
Of the six graduating seniors for the Wolves, five would start the match with just Dana Thomas sitting out due to injury.
In one of the more physical matches of the season, 27 total fouls and three yellow cards were handed out with 16 fouls and two cards being dealt to Central Washington (5-8-4, 5-5-2 GNAC).
The game remained scoreless at the end of the first half with Western Oregon (5-9-2, 3-7-1 GNAC) leading in shots, 5-3.
The Wolves finished with six corner kicks in the game to the three of CWU, but were unable to score on the six opportunities.
Alyssa Tomasini posted the only multi-shot game for Western Oregon, recording two shots in 82 minutes of work, while the Wildcats had four separate players with multiple shots on Thursday.
Malia Napoleon and
Jacky Beristain each played wire-to-wire for WOU on defense.
The lone goal of the match came from defender Emily Russell. After an impressive move to open up some space for herself at the top right side of the box, Russell unleashed a left foot that carried across the Wolves' defense and found the side netting for her second goal of the season. It would be Russell's only shot of the day, contributing 90 minutes for the CWU back line.
Western Oregon heads on the road for their final match of the regular season Oct. 27 at Saint Martin's. Kickoff Saturday is set for 2:30 p.m.
