GLENDORA, Calif. – Leading for just 17 seconds of the game Saturday, the Azusa Pacific Cougars capitalized on their final drive for a 7-6 comeback win over the Western Oregon Wolves at Citrus Stadium to keep their GNAC title hopes alive.
In the lowest scoring game of Western Oregon's (4-5, 3-4 GNAC) NCAA-era history with a combined 13 points, the Wolves relied on two
Adrian Saldana field goals to take a 6-0 lead into the fourth quarter.
Saldana first struck in the opening minute of the second quarter, taking advantage of good field position after a punt opened a Wolves' drive at the opposing 47. Fighting their way to the Azusa Pacific (6-3, 5-1 GNAC) 8-yard line, Saldana then delivered a 29-yard field goal to give the Wolves a 3-0 lead with 14:25 remaining in the first half.
The Western Oregon advantage was extended late in the third quarter with a 31-yard field goal, again from Saldana.
Nico Jackson rushed for 29 yards in the series to help get Saldana within chipping distance for the score. The Wolves took that 6-0 lead, following the successful field goal, deep into the fourth quarter.
Receiving a punt that was downed at their own 30, the Cougars began their game-winning drive with only 2:17 left to play in the game. Williams Jr. either passed or rushed on each play of the drive, culminating with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Weston Carr for his only catch of the day to tie the game at 6-6 with just 17 seconds remaining in the contest.
The Wolves opted to burn all three timeouts in an effort to ice kicker Jacob Hall, but it would be to no avail as Hall booted through the PAT attempt to give the Cougars a definitive 7-6 lead.
A last-second Hail Mary pass from
Ty Currie fell just short of the end zone and Western Oregon was denied their retaliatory victory.
The win was the sixth straight for Azusa Pacific over Western Oregon and keeps them in contention for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title following a win on Saturday for Central Washington over Humboldt State.
The Wolves' defense posted yet another outstanding performance, holding the Cougars to just 53 rushing yards and 242 total yards. Azusa Pacific, who has had their rushing attack top 200 yards on four separate occasions this season, averaged just 2.0 yards on 27 attempts while Western Oregon averaged 4.1 yards per carry. It was the fourth time this year WOU has held an opponent under 60 yards rushing.
Omari Land led the Wolves on the ground with 98 rushing yards on 18 attempts.
The Cougars' leading rusher, Bryce Grandison, had just 32 rushing yards on nine attempts which included a 14-yard run. Quarterback Tyrone Williams Jr. passed for 189 yards on 19-for-36 with one touchdown and one interception.
Punter
Andrew Gross set a season-high with a 59-yard punt in the first quarter. It was the longest punt for WOU in three years. Gross averaged 37.1 yards on seven punts, four of which landed inside the 20.
The Wolves continue their road trip with their penultimate regular-season game Nov. 3 against Simon Fraser. Kickoff at Terry Fox Field is set for 1 p.m.
