MONMOUTH, Ore.—Extending the team's unbeaten streak to 15 matches, the No. 7-ranked Western Washington University volleyball defeated Western Oregon, 3-0 (25-12. 25-15, 25-17), on Saturday evening.
Western Washington improved to 15-3 on the season and closed out the first half of its GNAC slate with a perfect 10-0 record. WWU has now won 28 straight regular-season GNAC matches. The result was Western Oregon's sixth straight setback and now sits at 5-12 on the year and 2-8 in conference competition.
The Wolves will remain at home next week when it hosts Saint Martin's on Thursday, Oct. 11 and Seattle Pacific on Saturday, Oct. 13.
Western Washington hit .500 to more than double up the Wolves in the opening set, 25-12, and went on to hold a .318 to .056 edge in attack rate on the evening.
Down 12-8 in the second, the Wolves rallied to knot the set at 13-13 following back-to-back
Mariella Vandenkooy kills, but the Vikings quickly regained their composure with a 12-2 run to go up 2-0 in the match.
Once down 20-10, the Wolves held WWU to their lowest hit rate of the match in the third and closed the gap to within six before the Vikings closed out the contest with a combo block by Kayleigh Harper and Gabby Gunterman.
Abby Phelps, WWU's all-time career kill leader, posted a match-high 15 kills and was followed by 13 kills from Harper.
Freshman
Descinda Slaughter paced the Wolves with seven kills while Vandenkooy and
Sianna DeCarli added six terminations each.
Vandenkooy added a team-high 11 digs while Leila Hot and
Maddie Mehciz shared the team lead with 12 assists.
