Eastern New Mexico repels late drive for 19-14 win

PORTALES, N.M. – The Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds thwarted a late drive by the Western Oregon Wolves to hold on for a 19-14 win on Saturday at Greyhounds Stadium.

All four of the game's touchdowns came in the opening quarter with a flurry of three combined touchdowns in the initial five minutes of the game.

Eastern New Mexico (5-6, 4-4 LSC) defensive back Charles Countee intercepted Ty Currie and returned the pick 28 yards for the first touchdown of the day, giving ENMU their first of two leads in the quarter at 7-0.

The Western Oregon (5-6, 4-4 GNAC) retort was swift. Omari Land rushed for 58 yards on the second play of the ensuing drive to help set up Nico Jackson's 6-yard rush for a score on the following play.

The Greyhounds responded with the third consecutive possession to yield a touchdown to reclaim the lead. ENMU quarterback Wyatt Strand found Nathan Betts for a 62-yard reception, pushing down to the 10-yard line of the Wolves on just the third play of the drive. Paul Terry snuck in for the 10-yard touchdown immediately after, giving ENMU back the lead at 14-7.

Both defenses began to settle in after that with three consecutive punts to follow.

Late in the first quarter, Nate Proctor Jr. deflected a lateral pass attempted by Strand to force a fumble. After a scramble that pushed the loose ball back another 20 yards, Proctor fell on it for the fumble recovery and turnover to give the Wolves prime field position beginning at the ENMU 15 yard line.

Ty Currie hit Evander Willingham three plays into the drive for an 11-yard touchdown. It was the first touchdown catch of Willingham's two-year career as well as the fourth and longest catch he has made. The score set up a successful PAT attempt to even the game back up at 14-14.

Currie had an impressive day on the ground, running for his longest gain of the season inside the last four minutes of the first half. After a play-action with a back moving to his right, Currie ran for 62 yards down to the ENMU 12. The long keeper set up a chance for WOU to take a lead into the locker room, but Adrian Saldana's 21-yard field goal attempt was blocked to keep the game even at 14-14 going into the half.

Western Oregon dominated the game in total yards, out-gaining the Greyhounds 239-122 in the first half and 335-246 overall. 179 of those first-half yards came on the ground with Land running for 75 and Currie for 65.

The third quarter saw another high punt total with four drives completed in the period resulting in three punts. The lone scoring of the third came on a 29-yard field goal converted by ENMU's Tyler Vargas to put the Greyhounds back up, 17-14 into the fourth.

Forced to punt just over a minute into the fourth quarter, Western Oregon's snap went over the head of Andrew Gross and out the back of the end zone to extend the ENMU lead, 19-14.

With time winding down and trailing by five, the Wolves were presented one last opportunity for a game-winning drive. Taking over on offense with 5:58 left in the game, Western Oregon made a push into the red zone, looking for their first lead of the game. Currie ran for 22 combined yards on consecutive plays before completing a pass to Marquis Sampson for a 27-yard gain, setting up a first down on the Greyhounds' seven yard line.

After two incomplete passes and a rushing attempt denied, the Wolves faced fourth down at the five with under two minutes left in the game. Currie moved out to his right on a bootleg pass attempt, but could not find an open receiver. Then moving for the end zone himself, he was tackled at the line of scrimmage for a turnover on downs, sealing the win for the Greyhounds.

Currie finished the day with 99 rushing yards and 121 through the air, throwing for one touchdown and two interceptions.

As a team, the Wolves finished with 214 rushing yards, the second straight week and third time this season they have finished with 200+ yards on the ground. Land accounted for 71 of those rushing yards and Jackson another 70.

Linebacker Bo Highburger finished with a season-high 15 tackles including 1.5 for a loss in his final game, helping the defense hold ENMU to just 71 passing yards in the contest.

The Wolves have completed their 2018 season, finishing with a 5-6 overall record and 4-4 mark in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
