BILLINGS, Mont.— The Montana State University Billings Yellowjackets rode the momentum of a dominant third set to a 3-1 (26-24, 22-25, 25-12, 25-19) victory over the Western Oregon Wolves Saturday afternoon at Alterowitz Gym.
Opening with a tightly contested first set, the Wolves outpaced the 'Jackets in hit percentage .297-.200 in the 26-24 set loss. Western Oregon converted 14 kills, committing just three errors to keep things close. The teams were never separated by more than four points in the set and never more than two after a 14-11 MSUB advantage.
The Wolves responded by evening the match with a late push in the second game for the win. Trailing 18-16, WOU rallied to outscore MSUB 9-4 over the final 13 points of the set with a
Sierra Stultz kill sealing the win.
The Yellowjackets found another gear in the final two sets, winning both by at least six and combining for 28 kills over the pair. The Wolves were held to seven kills in the third set and committed 10 errors in the fourth to be dealt the loss.
Mariella Vandekooy led WOU with 11 kills and just two errors, adding in one block, dig and assist.
Aubrey Stanton completed a double-double with a career-high 25 assists and 11 digs. It was Stanton's third career double-double and second consecutive after 11 assists and 10 digs Nov. 6 at Concordia.
Competing for the final time with Western Oregon,
Sophie Hall totaled a match-high five blocks, contributing on each team block in the match.
Sophomore Bayli Monck led all players with 14 kills for the Yellowjackets to compliment a .440 hit percentage.
The four-set loss was the first time since 2014 MSUB has managed to top the Wolves in fewer than five sets.
With their season now completed, Western Oregon finishes the year with a 6-21 overall record and a 3-17 record in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
