Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Trailblazers top Wolves, 59-40

itsST. GEORGE, Utah—Forcing 13 first-half turnovers, Dixie State University defeated Western Oregon University, 59-40, in non-conference women's basketball actin on Friday afternoon.

Playing on its home court inside Burns Arena, Dixie State (2-0) nearly doubled up the Wolves with an 18-10 advantage after the first quarter. The DSU defense went on to hold Western Oregon (0-3) to just six points in the second quarter for a 17-point lead at the break.

The Wolves opened the game's scoring with an Olivia Denton free throw and managed to knot the game at 4-4 via a Keyonna Jones 3-pointer, but the Trailblazers used a 14-6 run to close out the opening quarter to secure the lead for good.

"Our focus points coming off last weekend's games were to consistently box out and to limit our turnovers.  We did a decent job with the first but turnovers plagued us in both halves tonight," WOU head coach Holli Howard-Carpenter said.  "We allowed their press and their physicality to bother us and in turn we struggled to score."

Western Oregon shot 25 percent (6 of 24) in the first half and improved to 37 percent (10 of 27) in the second. The two teams tied in total rebounds through the first 20 minutes of play at 20-20 while DSU finished with a one-carom edge, 37-36, in the end.

Natalie DeLonge led the Wolves with eight points while Denton finished with seven and Ali Nelke six. Denton and Nelke shared team-high honors with six rebounds each.

WOU's scoring total was its lowest scoring game since being held to 39 points in a road contest at No. 2-ranked Alaska Anchorage on Jan. 7, 2016.

Closing out the Dixie State Tournament, Western Oregon will turn around to play Colorado Mesa on Saturday. Opening tip is set for 3 p.m. (MST).

"Defensively, I thought we did a solid job, especially in the second half.  We defended the 3-ball for the most part and forced them into 18 turnovers," Howard-Carpenter said. "It's a quick turnaround so there's no time to hang heads, we have to commit to getting better."
