MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon Wolves won their third straight game on Saturday with an 88-66 victory over the Corban Warriors at NPE Gym.
Western Oregon (6-1, 2-0 GNAC) started off cold from deep, going 1-for-8 on their first eight shots from 3-point range to fall into an early hole.
Corban (9-2, 0-1 CCC) led 6-5 after six minutes of play until
Dalven Brushier hit two straight 3-pointers and the Wolves buried three consecutive from beyond the arc to open up a multi-possession advantage. They would not trail again in the game.
Brushier finished with 16 points in the first half on 5-of-7 shooting including 4-of-6 from three. The junior guard hit a contested 3-pointer as time expired to give the Wolves a 35-22 lead at halftime, their largest lead of the half.
Offensive rebounding was a critical advantage in the game for the Wolves. WOU held an 8-1 margin over CU in the category early to help push out their lead into double figures.
The game was highlighted by strong second halves from multiple Western Oregon players, but the Warriors would not go away quietly.
Corban made a strong push midway through second half thanks to strong bench scoring. After trailing by as many as 19, the Warriors' 3-point shooting warmed up, riding the strong half of freshman Chandler Cavell. Cavell went scoreless in the first half before rattling off a team-high 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting in the second half.
The Warriors did what they could to try and slow down the Wolves by shooting 60% both overall and from three in the second half, but it was not enough.
Kaleb Warner,
Etan Collins and
Riley Hawken all posted big second halves to pull away for the 22-point win.
Collins scored a season-high 24 points to lead all scorers, getting 15 of those after the break. The freshman is now the seventh different player for Western Oregon to lead the team in scoring in their seven games.
Warner also posted a strong second half, getting 19 of his 20 points coming out of the locker room. He added on four rebounds and two assists in 24 minutes.
The win is now the eight consecutive for WOU over Corban, dating back to 2002.
Next up for the Wolves are four straight games in Hawaii, including the Hoops in Hawaii DII Power Invitational. They open play in the Aloha state Dec. 14 against the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. PST.
