AZUSA, Calif.—Winning the final two games by one run each, No.1 3-ranked Azusa Pacific closed out a three-game baseball series with a 7-6 win over Western Oregon on Saturday.
WOU (0-4) will return to the field with a three-game series against Lewis-Clark State College on Feb. 23-25 in Lewiston, Idaho.
Game 3 – Azusa Pacific 7, Western Oregon 6
In a game with five lead changes, a seventh-inning home run by Sean Aspinall was the difference maker as Azusa Pacific (8-0) completed a three-game sweep with a 7-6 win over Western Oregon University on Saturday.
Falling behind 3-1 after the first inning, the Wolves rallied with a 3-spot in the top of the fourth on back-to-back home runs by Nyles Nygaard and Jared McDonald.
The Cougars retaliated with a 2-run homer by Austin Russ in the fifth for a 6-5 advantage.Setting up the game-tying run, Nygaard got on base to start the sixth after being hit by a pitch. After advancing to second on a wild pitch,
Nygaard moved to third on a fly out off the bat of Spencer Bennion to set up Drey McInnes for an RBI opportunity.
On a 2-0 count McInnes delivered a single through the middle to knot the game at 6-6
Nick Estrella earned the win with four innings of work out of the pen. Estrella allowed one run on four hits while striking out five.
Jacob Martinez led the Wolves at the plate with a 3-for-5 performance.
Game 2 - Azusa Pacific 4, Western Oregon 3
Using a walk-off double in the bottom of the 11th inning, Azusa Pacific completed the Friday sweep over Western Oregon with a 4-3 win in the nightcap.
Nyles Nygard provided the early offense for the Wolves with a solo home run in the second and an RBI single in the seventh. The Cougars used the long ball for its first runs as Nick Estrella and Osvaldo Tovalin went deep in the middle innings.
Down 3-2, following Nygaard's RBI single in the seventh, Jared McDonald and Griffey Halle connected on consecutive singles to provide the game-scoring run.
The Wolves, however, could not muster another hit over the final 4 2/3 innings as APU's Johnny Szczesny and Declan Kearney shut down the WOU attack. Kearney picked up the win after hurling the final two frames.
Mychael Goudreau scored the game-winning run after being hit by a pitch and moving to second on a wild pitch. Sean Aspinall followed with the game-ending double to center field.
Game 1 – Azusa Pacific 7, Western Oregon 2
The Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the first and used a quality start by I Carranza to defeat Western Oregon, 7-2, in the opening game of a three-game series.
Carranza allowed two runs on four hits in a six-inning start to pick up the win while Aversa closed out the game with three innings of scoreless work for his second save of the season.
The Wolves pulled to within a single run after notching single scores in the fourth and fifth frames. Justin Waken delivered an RBI in the fourth while Jacob Martinez doubled to score
Jay Leverett in the fifth.
The Cougars bounced back immediately with a 2-run home half of the fifth and tacked on two more insurance runs in the eighth. Despite the run differential, APU only outhit the Wolves 8-to-7.
WOU's Connor McCord took the loss after allowing five runs (only two earned) on 5 1/3 innings of work.
