ELLENSBURG, Wash.—Playing its last road contest of the regular season, the No. 4-ranked Western Oregon University men's basketball team extended its winning streak to 18 game with an, 89-59, wire-to-wire win at Central Washington University on Saturday.
Western Oregon (25-1, 17-1 GNAC) opened up a double-digit lead in just over five minutes of play as a 3-pointer by senior
Tanner Omlid made it a 15-4 spread.
Central Washington (15-10, 10-8 GNAC) managed to keep the game to within seven (29-22) points on a Khalil Shabbazz 3-pointer but cold not keep pace with their visitors as WOU extended its advantage to 16 (44-28) by the break.
Using 22 offensive rebounds that led to 34 second-chance points, WOU never trailed in the game en route to the 30-point win. Fourteen of Western Oregon's wins during the 18-game streak have come by at least 10 points.
The victory sets up a showdown of the top two teams in the GNAC with Western Washington University (20-6, 13-5 GNAC) traveling to Monmouth on Thursday, Feb. 22. WWU handed the Wolves its lone loss of the season with an 85-58 win in Bellingham on Dec. 2.
With two games remaining, WOU is assured of at least a share of the GNAC regular-season title, though WWU would hold a tiebreaker over the Wolves should the two teams finish with the same conference record.
Ali Faruq-Bey led all scorers with 24 points on 9-of-18 shooting. Omlid added 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for his fourth 'double-double of the season. Malik Morgan scored 13 while Vince Boumann and Darius Lubom added nine points each.
The two teams shot similar percentages inside the Nicholson Pavilion. 43.0 to 40.0 percent in favor of the Wolves, but WOU was controlling on the glass by finishing with a 54-to-29 edge in total rebounds.
