PORTLAND, Ore.—Holding its foes to a single run, the Western Oregon University softball team won both matchups in the first day of the Concordia Classic, held at Porter Park, on Saturday.
Western Oregon (9-7) defeated Northwest University, 2-1, in the morning session and returned with a 6-0 win against Eastern Oregon University in the nightcap. The Wolves will return to play the same two squads tomorrow morning with an 11 a.m. start time against EOU in the opener.
Game 1 – Western Oregon 2, Northwest 1
The Wolves received a complete game performance from starter Haley Fabian in the circle and used two early runs to hold off the Eagles of Northwest University (2-5) in the opening game of the Concordia Classic.
Kennedy Coy tripled in the second inning to plate Monica Martinez for the opening score and immediately crossed the plate herself as Ayanna Arceneaux singled during the next at bat.The two runs held up as Fabian allowed just three hits in the ball game while striking out seven batters.
The Eagles managed its lone run in the top of the fourth but were sent down in order over the next three frames as Fabian retired her last 11 batters she faced.
Game 2 – Western Oregon 6, Eastern Oregon 0
Lizzet Dominguez tossed a three-hit complete game to help the Wolves to a 6-0 win over Eastern Oregon (2-3) to complete the Saturday sweep.
The Wolves provided Dominguez with two runs in the top of the first with Ryanne Huffman and Nicole Miller connecting on RBI swings. WOU threatened to blow the game open in the second with three singles to start the stanza but managed just a single run on a wild pitch before EOU escaped additional damage.
Ayanna Arceneaux delivered the decisive smash with a 2-run homer in the sixth following a leadoff double by Cheyanne Rimer.
Improving to 4-1 on the season, Dominguez walked four and struck out one in the shut out performance.
