Wolves leave Concordia Classic undefeated

PORTLAND, Ore.—Closing out the Concordia Classic, the Western Oregon University softball team defeated Eastern Oregon University, 4-2, on Sunday to win its fourth straight game.

With the win, Western Oregon improved to 10-7 on the season while Eastern Oregon dropped to 3-5. The Wolves were originally scheduled to play Corban University in an evening game at Porter Park, but the tournament schedule was truncated due to rainfall in the region.

WOU defeated Northwest University, 2-1, and EOU, 6-0, in the opening day of the Concordia Classic and finished the two-day tournament with a 3-0 record.

Behind starter Maddie McCelland, Western Oregon held the Mountaineers scoreless until the fifth inning and held on as EOU left runners on base in the final five frames while seeking the rally. Leading off the bottom of the third, Cheyanne Rimer provided the game's opening run with a solo homer to left-center field.

The Wolves returned in the fourth with four hits and used an EOU error to plate a trio of runs following a 13-minute rain delay. Rimer once again delivered a key swing by lifting a single to left to score Zoe Clark. Clark reached on an RBI double of her own while Tyler Creach also picked up an RBI with a ground out that scored Sydney Bowers.

McClelland (3-2) allowed two runs through five innings before turning the ball over to Haley Fabian. Fabian allowed three hits but kept the Mountaineers without a run over the final two frames to pick up the save.

WOU will travel to Western Washington next week by opening GNAC play against the Vikings on March 10. The Wolves will turn around and play at Simon Fraser on March 11 before their first home date of the season set for March 17 against Saint Martin's
