LACEY, Wash.—Tied heading to the fourth quarter, Saint Martin's University pulled away late to defeat Western Oregon University, 73-66, in GNAC women's basketball action on Saturday night.
With the result, Western Oregon ended its season with an 11-15 overall record and a 7-13 mark in GNAC competition. The 11 wins is tied for the best total by a WOU team over the past 15 seasons. Saint Martin's closed the year with an 8-20 overall record and 4-16 in conference contests. "I'm disappointed we weren't able to send our seniors out on a win. They all have been such a big part of changing the culture of our program and I've enjoyed coaching them," WOU head coach
Holli Howard-Carpenter said.
The Wolves left the first quarter with a 22-21 lead thanks to 10 early points by senior
Shelby Snook. SMU dominated the second quarter only for WOU to return with another spark out of the break.
Outscoring the home team 15-8 in the third quarter, WOU evened the match at 47-47 heading to the final quarter.
SMU's Makenna Schultz and Jayla Russ combined to score 15 of the team's 26 points over the final 10 minutes of play while the team shot 50 percent from the floor over the span en route to the seven-point win.
"St. Martin's came to play tonight and we were sluggish from the start. Our defense was subpar and we got into early foul trouble which really hurt our matchups," Howard-Carpenter said.
WOU committed 27 personal fouls in the game compared to 15 such offenses for the Saints. Sent to the line 31 times, SMU utilized the opportunities for 21 points.
Snook and Schultz shared game-high honors with 19 points each. Snook reached double figures in scoring in each of the final five games of the season.
Savannah Heugly added 13 points while
Sydney Azorr chipped in with a 10-point night. Heugly and
Jasmine Miller tied for the game high with nine rebounds.
