MONMOUTH, Ore.—Flirting with a career high in scoring and breaking a career school record, Western Oregon University senior
Tanner Omlid guided the Wolves to their 15th straight win after a 95-81 victory against Seattle Pacific on Thursday.
Omlid poured in 22 points in the first half and finished two shy of his career high of 34 as the No. 4-ranked Western Oregon team captured its15th straight win.
In addition to Omlid's 32-point outburst, the forward was credited with seven assists, five rebounds, five blocks and five steals. The performance was Omlid's second of the season where he notched at least five in each category as he also reached the mark against Portland Bible College on Dec. 7.
The local product from Central High School converted 10-of-14 from the floor in the first half to help the Wolves come back from an 8-point deficit late in the first half and square the contest at 48-48 at the break.
Looking at an upset bid on the road, Seattle Pacific (13-9, 8-7 GNAC) grabbed a 45-37 advantage on a Gharry Cavell layup with 3:40 remaining in the first half before a seven-point spree by Omlid and a layup by
Demetrius Trammell made it a one-point gap (47-46). After a SPU free throw, Malik Morgan made his way to the rim for the game-tying basket before the half.
SPU shot 63.0 percent from the floor in the first half but fell back to 34.6 percent over the final 20 minutes as the Wolves amplified the pressure on the defensive end.
"Omlid has such a great feel for the ball. He's quicker than you think he is and he's ultra-competitive. That's probably the greatest asset he has, that he can rise to the occasion and do so many things to get his team extra possessions," SPU head coach Grant Leep said.
Offensively,
Ali Faruq-Bey scored 17 of his 25 points in the second half while the Wolves went up by as many as 16 points (70-56). Faruq-Bey finished the game 12-for-12 from the free throw line with 10 attempts in the second half.
With 226 career steals, Omlid now holds WOU's career DII-era record for total steals.
The Wolves forced 17 turnovers while committing just five of the same offenses. Five different players reached double figures in scoring for the Falcons with Nathan Streufert leading the way with 17 points. Coleman Wooten added 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
In a matchup of the two hottest teams in the GNAC, WOU will return to the court on Saturday, Feb. 10 by hosting Saint Martin's University. The Saints have won eight straight games and sit one game back of second place in the conference standings. Opening tip is set for 7:30 p.m. inside the New P.E. Gymnasium.
