Wolves sweep 3-game set in Texas

CANYON, Texas—Scoring 27 runs throughout the three-game stretch, Western Oregon University went 3-0 on the opening day of action at the Lady Buff Classic on Friday.

Western Oregon (6-2), was originally planned to play two games in the opener but due to expected cold temperatures and windy conditions in the forecast, Saturday's game versus Southwest Oklahoma State was moved up a day.

Game 1 – Western Oregon 5, Southwest Oklahoma State 3
Despite being outhit 10-to-8 in the game, Western Oregon used timely hits to defeat Southwest Oklahoma State in the opening game of the Lady Bluff Classic on Friday.

After notching a single run in the second, WOU jumped out to a 3-0 advantage thanks to a 2-run blast off the bat of Nicole Miller in the third.

SWOSU managed one run in the top of the fifth only to see Western Oregon plate a pair in the home half of the stanza with an Ayanna Arceneaux single starting the attack. A Ryanne Huffman single and three wild pitched allowed both base runners to score for the 5-1 advantage.

SWOSU threatened a rally in the seventh but back-to-back baserunning miscues, the first an out via leaving the bag early on a stolen base attempt and the second a caught stolen base dash on a throw by, Miller, WOU's catcher.

Lizzet Dominguez pitcher her third complete game of the season to improve to 3-0 on the year. Dominguez struck out one batter and walked two over the seven-inning performance

Game 2 – Western Oregon 7, #13 West Texas A&M 4

Western Oregon erupted for seven unanswered runs to nearly mercy-rule the Lady Buffs, but needed a bases-loaded escape in the seventh to hold on for win over the No. 13-ranked team from West Texas A&M.

The Wolves sent two unearned runs home in the top of the first to provide an immediate cushion for starter Maddie McClelland.

With the lead, McClelland held the Lady Buffs at bay through four full innings before the shutout was broken in the bottom of the fifth with a single run. Haley Fabian closed out the game with a three-inning appearance.

The Wolves batted all nine positions in the fourth with four different players connecting on an RBI hit. Jenna Kelly came through with the final two scores on a 2-run single to right.

Game 3 – Western Oregon 15, Southwest Oklahoma State 7

The Wolves scored in four of the sixth innings, including a decisive 7-run sixth to defeat SWOSU, 15-7, in the final game of the day in the Lady Buff Classic.

Nicole Miller capped a huge day with a 3-for-5 line at the plate with four RBI. Miller belted a 2-run double in the second inning and a 2-run double in the sixth.

Chandler Bishop picked up the win with 2 2/3 of no-hit relief work from the circle. Bishop struck out six and walked two in the outing.

Overall, the Wolves  clubbed 17 hits compared to 11 for SWOSU.
